Vat Savitri Vrat Katha
Vat Savitri Vrat Katha is a mythological tale associated with Satyavan and Savitri. This tale tells how Savitri struggled to save her husband Satyavan's life. Savitri had got Satyavan's life back under the Vat tree, so the Vat tree is worshipped in this fast. The tale says that King Ashwapati of Madra country was ordered to observe Savitri Vrat to get a child. He did rigorous penance and finally got a daughter named Savitri. When Savitri grew up, she married Satyavan. Satyavan had a short lifespan, and Narada told Savitri that Satyavan would die within a year.
One day, Satyavan went to the forest to cut wood and died. Savitri prayed to Yamraj to take Satyavan's life back. Seeing Savitri's strong will and penance, Yamraj returned Satyavan's life. In this way, Savitri got Satyavan's life back, and Satyavan's life came back under the Banyan tree; therefore, worshipping the Banyan tree has special importance in this fast.
